Daytona Weekend

I finally got up off the couch at about 8:30PM on Sunday evening. I started watching at about 9:15PM on Friday - that's a lot of racing! I've even been falling asleep with the TV set to the Speed channel. It's been a hoot - like a Daytona vacation.

The race was thrilling and I loved the asphalt repair delay.

But the end, with Jamie McMurray taking the checkered flag, gave me goose bumps. Dale coming in 2nd was AWESOME!

I can't understand how anyone can say that NASCAR is boring. Take a look at a tape of today's race!

An innocent dog walk led to an exciting NASCAR moment - as Molly and I walked our usual route this morning we spotted the NASCAR display at our local Jewel food store. Molly and I went over to look at the cars and noticed that there were many people standing in a big long line just waiting ...... so I went to a Jewel manager and asked which driver was coming to the store ...... he replied "KASEY KAHNE." he said. "That's my favorite driver!" I yelled. So I ran home, put Molly in the house (too hot for her to stand in line), got my camera and ran back to Jewel. Kasey would be there at 11:00 to sign autographs - I got in line at 10:30. Stood behind a little family of two boys and a mom. The older boy was a kindergartner and Kasey was his favorite driver! Number 9 RULES!!!!!! He kept telling everyone. I told the boys I had a Kasey Kahne cap, die-cast car and poster from his 1st Cup win in his rookie year- all autographed.
However I had nothing with me for Kasey to autograph so I ripped a Bud sign off the fencing where I was standing and figured I could use that for his autograph. I got up to Kasey by 11:30. He was so adorable that I couldn't help myself so I patted his hand and told him good luck this weekend. He is the FIRST driver I've met and touched! Thanks to this event I now have a picture of Kasey and me as a memento but I'm posting a picture that I think more people will appreciate!

I just finished "Then Junior Said to Jeff..." by David Poole and Jim McLaurin! Another great NASCAR book. It tells some great stories - my favorite, on page 52 called the Stretcher Story - it involves Buddy Baker and a wild ambulance ride. It was a hoot!

Talladega was a blast - how can people say racing is boring?! I thought the race was great - very tight! I kept hollering for everyone to win! Denny, and Junior of course! Kyle's big win was a great thing for him. It seems like he's got his spark back - nothing like getting kicked out of a team to make you want to prove them wrong!

Molly's birthday is Tuesday and she'll be 7 - that doesn't seem possible! She is feeling much better after her little tummy problem so maybe she'll be able to celebrate with a little doggy ice cream!

Happy February to all! I've been enjoying the weather....snow, snow and more snow along with freezing temps and NO SUN! My Molly also enjoys the snow but the freezing temps are hard on her little paws so when we walk on those weather days....there is a lot of "carrying" going on!

How do you like the new blog look? I've added new links so check them out! I've included a two new rescue groups. One I've recently become acquainted with is called Blessed Bonds. It is very unique so give them a click!

NASCAR IS BACK! Mark Martin came in 2nd at Daytona - could you hear me screaming! By the end of the race I needed a nap from the driving "stress" and trying to be Mark's virtual crew chief. I was pulling for Tony but when he crashed and I realized that Mark had a chance I got out the pom-pons. I was cheering and yelling and telling him to step on the gas. He got second - I won't even go into the whole caution flag debate - but in my heart he is first! I don't know if I could have raced to the line like Kevin (I love Harvick too.) I'd like to think I'd have eased up on the gas a little but then Mark wouldn't have wanted to win that way. What a classy guy!

Quilting update- I was all ready and set for Midday Madness. I actually had my blocks precut and sewn!!!!!! That is a first for me but when I got to the 9AM class I visited and ate and visited and talked and ate that I didn't start sewing until 2:30 and then I stopped sewing at 3PM so I could visit and talk and play with Molly (she is the Midday Mascot so she spent the day as the assistant teacher). It was a fun day. I think our dinner trip to Coopers Hawk winery was the topper to the whole event. Our waiter Adam or Ed (I can't remember his name.) had never met a group of quilters before ..... I think we had him muttering to himself before the night was over!

Just finished this great book - The Fourth Bear by Jasper Fforde. He is the author of the Thursday Next series but this book happens to be the second in the Nursery Crime series. Get it - Nursery Crimes as in Gingerbreadman is a serial killer and chief of detectives is Jack Spratt! It is a hoot!

How did he weave all these references in and out of an almost 400 page book?

NASCAR - Carl is out! I am not happy! Come on Mark! Read Power Rankings for some great takes on the race. I am so glad it's not just me - I can't stand NBC coverage of NASCAR! NBC coverage is the reason people think racing = boring - 20 minutes of commercials and 5 minutes of racing. And when they do come back to the track they miss the best parts! I am just waiting for the truck race to come back.

Put together my new sewing cabinet. It really perks up the sewing room. Gives it pizzazz! Have I sewn on it yet? No, all I do is clean up the room. I am "feng shuing" big time! Will I be able to adjust to my new sewing surface and height? I had been sewing on my old school desk with a door across the top (my extension). The new set up is so much better for my back - no more sewing with my arms in the air! I'll keep you posted.

NASCAR comes to Chicagoland! July 6,2206

Well, it's here! It's arrived ...the cars are at Jewel and CARL EDWARDS is coming to Office Depot in Frankfort!!!!!!!!! Nobody will appreciate this except Audra! I call her and she's excited too! She comes out to meet me and we discover that to actually meet Carl you needed - or should I say I NEEDED to get to Office Depot before 8AM to get us wristbands. I'm bummed! and upset because I made Audra drive all this way for possibly nothing. Audra comes up with a great idea - we'll go into Office Depot 15minutes before he's supposed to show up and we'll start shopping. The idea is that they won't kick us out if we are pushing a cart. Guess what they didn't. We were the only people inside the store except for the clerks so we kept taking pictures of Carl through the glass windows and then parked in front of the doors to get a picture of him coming into the store. It worked .... and he is VERY CUTE in person. Check it out!

The Office Depot store had a great display. Audra and I talked with the fellow that drove the display car hauler. His name was Bruce Murray and we think he said his nickname was Brooster. He told us that whenever DW talked about Brooster and Chocolate he was the GUY. He said he was part of Dale Sr.'s crew and he quit racing when Dale was killed but then he returned when he realized racing was a big part of his life. Kinda like quilting? Anyway, here's a picture of Brooster. He had great stories and seemed really happy being able to share them with the crowd. It looks like the crowd was very small but what you don't see are the people waiting in line with WRISTBANDS! Those of us without wristbands had the place all to ourselves. So we could take great pictures. I've also added a picture of the "wheels" Carl drove to get to the personal appearance. No "handlers" for Carl!!!!!!!
